Next week, the Warehouse Theatre Company and the Capitol Theatre launch their third joint production of "A Christmas Carol." And if you think you've seen this classic Charles Dickens tale before, think again, says director Barbara Lund.
With plenty of folks feeling like the cash-strapped Cratchit family this year, Lund is looking to make her production more merry and bright.
"I wanted to play it differently. I wanted to play it lighter, to have more fun," says Lund, the first new director to take the "Carol" helm. The previous two productions were directed by Tony Akin.
"I just knew when everything went to hell this year (in the economy), I couldn't do it so dreary," explains Lund.
Another big change is in casting.
All but one or two actors in the 60-plus member community cast are in new roles, including that of Ebenezer Scrooge, who was played by Vance Jennings in the past two productions.
This year, Jennings' friend Kurt Labberton is taking on the role of the miserly ol' Scrooge. Labberton played the good-hearted Bob Cratchit in the inaugural production and the Charles Dickens/narrator in the 2006 show. (But don't fret Jennings fans, he's still in the show.)
Begun in 2004, the Warehouse and the Capitol join forces every other year -- alternating with the Eugene Ballet Company's production of "The Nutcracker" -- to produce and present this lavish holiday favorite.
This year, performances are at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Capitol Theatre, 19 S. Third St.
Tickets cost $10 to $40 and are available through TicketsWest, 800-325-7328, or the Capitol Theatre box office, 853-2787.
Before the shows, you can meet Santa and Mrs. Claus -- so don't forget your wish list -- sip hot chocolate, listen to carolers and even catch a glimpse of live reindeer and a camel. The holiday activities begin at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 6 and 7 outside the Capitol Theatre. That block of Third Street will be closed to make way for the festivities.
