The Upper Valley has been home for George and Shirley McAlpin for most of their lives.
During their high school years, the couple dated before breaking up and marrying other people.
In their 50s, they got back together, married and returned to the area to live on a 2.5-acre property in Naches Heights.
But in their 70s, they will now call Terrace Heights home as they move into one of the first houses built in The Villas at Terrace Heights, a gated community for residents 55 and older located along South 41st Street, about a half-mile south of Terrace Heights Drive.
"(Naches Heights) was getting to be a lot of work for two people in our age," Shirley McAlpin said.
Lots have been completed for the first phase of 67 homes, said Pat Loomis, managing partner for the project. Six homes have been sold and built and another nine lots have been reserved.
Another home is complete but will serve as a permanently furnished model for the development. Another two model homes, which are nearly complete, will be available for sale.
The development, which is being built in three phases, includes 149 homes ranging from 1,489 to 2,292 square feet. Prices for the homes range from $247,900 to more than $341,900.
The McAlpins purchased a custom three-bedroom, two-bath home with a three-car garage for about $275,000. One big benefit for the couple is closer proximity to a good workout. The couple once had to drive about 25 minutes from Naches Heights for their three-hour workouts at the YMCA.
Now that they live in Terrace Heights, the drive is only five minutes, Shirley McAlpin said.
To celebrate the new residents and the progress of the project, the developers will hold a ribbon-cutting at 4 p.m. today at the development's clubhouse.
